MLB Preseason Rankings #27 Los Angeles Angels

HOW ARE THINGS LOOKING?

The outlook for the Angels isn’t very promising as another season approaches. They currently rank as the 4th worst team in the AL West, partly due to the A’s reluctance to invest in their team. Despite having Mike Trout, a legendary figure in the franchise and MLB history, the Angels haven’t made the playoffs since 2014, tying for the longest drought in the MLB. The team will be under the leadership of new manager Ron Washington, known for his past successes with the Rangers, but expectations for competitiveness this year are low.

PITCHING STAFF

Pitching remains a concern for the Angels, especially with the loss of Shohei Ohtani. While his absence on the mound this year was anticipated, his impact will still be felt. The rotation now relies on lesser-known names like Reid Detmers, Griffin Canning, Patrick Sandoval, Tyler Anderson, and Chase Silseth. The bullpen also lacks depth and standout talent, with Matt Moore perhaps being the most notable presence. However, Reid Detmers shows promise with his impressive strikeout record.

HITTING SITUATION

As for hitting, it’s once again the Mike Trout show, with hopes that he can stay healthy and reaffirm his status as one of the best in the game. The rest of the lineup features a mix of young players and some experienced ones like Anthony Rendon, whose performance has been hampered by injuries. Losing Hunter Renfroe and Ohtani further weakens the lineup, and injuries continue to be a significant issue for the team.

PROJECTION

Overall, expectations for the Angels are quite low, with little hope for significant improvement in the win column. Winning more than 70 games would be considered a miracle, with a projected record of 68-96 indicating a tough season ahead.
