2024 MLB Preseason Rankings: #30: Oakland Athletics

HOW’S THE OUTLOOK?

The Oakland Athletics endured a dismal 2023 season, and unfortunately, the prospects for 2024 aren’t much brighter, especially with the looming relocation to Las Vegas being the only glimmer of hope. Bereft of top-tier talent or star players, the team relies on a roster of young and largely unremarkable players, with slim chances of breakout performances. Although they possess former top 100 prospects like Shea Langeliers, JJ Bleday, and Tyler Soderstrom, injuries and underwhelming performances have tempered expectations. Manager Mark Kotsay enters his third season with hopes of surpassing the disappointing 50-win mark, but given the team’s history of frugal management, significant improvement seems improbable.

PITCHING STRUGGLES

The pitching situation is dire, with the A’s finishing second-worst in ERA last season. Despite the additions of Ross Stripling and Alex Wood, the rotation remains lackluster, populated by pitchers with underwhelming statistics and little potential for significant improvement. The bullpen offers little respite, lacking a standout closer and featuring mostly mediocre performers. Mason Miller stands out as a potential bright spot with his promising performance in limited innings, but overall, the pitching staff is unlikely to inspire confidence.

HITTING WOES

Offensively, the A’s were the worst-scoring team in 2023, showcasing deficiencies in batting average, hits, and OBP. While they excel in stolen bases, their inability to consistently get on base hampers their ability to score runs. The projected lineup doesn’t boast any standout names, though players like Seth Brown or Brent Rooker could provide occasional power hitting. However, expectations for offensive production remain low overall.

PROJECTION

The A’s are a team in transition, with little hope of immediate success. While they may cultivate future star players, the current roster lacks the cohesion and talent to compete at a high level. Finishing above 55 wins would be considered a significant achievement, but realistically, they are poised to remain at the bottom of the league standings. Prediction: 55-107.
