2024 MLB Preseason Rankings: #29 Chicago White Sox

HOW ARE THINGS LOOKING?

The Chicago White Sox find themselves amidst a string of setbacks. Just a couple of years ago, they were touted as World Series contenders, boasting a roster including Abreu, Anderson, Jimenez, Robert, Giolito, Rodon, and Cease. However, circumstances swiftly changed, potentially due to managerial decisions from the aging Tony La Russa or simply lackluster performance. Presently, they languish at the 29th spot on my list. With most of their star players departed, the team now comprises young talents seeking redemption or aiming to carve out their own legacy. Under manager Pedro Grifol, they strive for more than the disappointing 61 wins of the past season. However, within the highly competitive American League Central, it’s evident they fall short, facing at least four superior teams.

PITCHING STAFF

Dylan Cease leads the White Sox pitching staff, albeit with trade rumors swirling around him. Despite being perceived as an ace, his statistics fail to match up. A “ACE” with a 4+ ERA isn’t conducive to victory; Cease needs to step up his game. The remainder of the rotation consists of Eric Fedde, Michael Kopech, Mike Soroka, and Chris Flexen, none of whom managed an ERA below 4 last season. While not an impressive lineup, there’s potential for improvement, especially with Soroka’s return from injury. If he can replicate his 2019 form, it could inject much-needed vigor into the team. However, the overall outlook appears bleak, with little promise of a turnaround.

The bullpen doesn’t offer much solace either, lacking standout performers. Touki Toussaint might shine if he can curb his tendency to issue walks. Yet, it remains a glaring weakness, further contributing to the White Sox’s low ranking.

HITTING SITUATION

Once considered a formidable lineup, the White Sox now struggle to impress. While there are still some strong hitters like Andrew Vaughn and Eloy Jimenez, the bottom half of the lineup comprising Martin Maldonado, Nicky Lopez, Paul DeJong, and Dominic Fletcher leaves much to be desired. Benintendi’s underwhelming performance last season dealt a significant blow, and Yoan Moncada has yet to fulfill expectations since his trade from the Red Sox. Luis Robert stands out as a beacon of talent, capable of delivering impressive numbers if he can stay healthy. Nevertheless, injuries could easily dismantle an already fragile lineup.

PROJECTION

On paper, the White Sox appear woefully inadequate. From starters to the bullpen, the team lacks depth and quality, likely ranking among the league’s worst. Even a few injuries could plummet them to the league’s basement. There’s little to inspire optimism among fans, save for the potential of Robert and the uncertainty surrounding Cease’s future. Realistically, they’re a 65-win team at best, with anything beyond that being a remarkable surprise. My prediction: 63-99
